The Solution is Plain . . . . The Will to Implement The Solution Requires Leaders Who are Sane . . .

Sigh . . . . .  Looks like it's time for another conservative ratfucking hypocrites parade:

MAY 22, 2014, 5:02 PM EDT
House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Thursday became the first Republican leader to call on Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki to resign, amid a brewing scandal involving dozens of veteran deaths while waiting for medical care.
He made his position known in a lengthy statement, saying he has received "countless complaints from my constituents of extended wait times and delayed benefits claims at the VA in Los Angeles" and that he offered legislation last October to "address these abhorrent failings in the VA." He allowed that the failings "are not new."
"General Shinseki, Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, has served his country with honor and integrity. No one doubts his dedication to our nation’s veterans. However, the current state of the VA is wholly unacceptable and has become a national embarrassment – it requires immediate action," McCarthy said.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/kevin-mccarthy-eric-shinseki-resign

Listen, anybody who has family members or friends who are veterans knows all too well that the problems within the Veteran's Administration system have been around for a very, very long time, and have been in existence across both Republican and Democratic administrations.

Eric Shinseki is not the problem.  The problems are systemic and there is no magic bullet candidate that will replace Shinseki and who can fix the problem.  And when The Gadfly uses the term "systemic," he means that Congress, the Senate and the American people share just as much, if not more, of the blame for the shoddy treatment that is being afforded our military veterans as General Shinseki does.

Predictably, the GOP toady McCarthy goes right for the lizard-brain emotional jugular by noting the travesty and horror over reports of "dozens" of veterans dying while waiting to receive medical care.  Welcome to the civilian world of American healthcare you pious fucking hypocrite.

Prior to the implementation of the ACA, a conservative estimate had calculated that somewhere around 45,000 American civilians were dying every year, for the years studied 2005-2012, solely due to a lack of access to basic health care.  Those numbers were culled from a peer-reviewed study by Harvard Medical School and were vetted and validated by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Center for Health Statistics, the Census Bureau, and the Urban Institute.

And so only now, after reports that a few dozen veterans died waiting for medical attention, are the conservatives suddenly experiencing the urge to feel compassion for their fellow Americans dying unnecessarily?  Really?  Once again we see the conservative movement for the vapid, cruel ugliness that it is -- cherry picking those human lives, based on a value scale that hews to their twisted ideological standards, who apparently are more valuable and worthy of compassion and attention than others.  And once again, The Gadfly will state for the record that this modern day conservative movement is the corporeal disease that is preventing this country from achieving a greatness beyond the dreams of the founding fathers.

And The Gadfly truly does just have to chuckle in bemusement at Rep. McCarthy's demand that this situation with the VA "requires immediate action."

You mean the kind of action like from February of this year where a Democratic sponsored bill would have "expanded federal healthcare and education programs for veterans?":

WASHINGTON Thu Feb 27, 2014 3:50pm EST
(Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republicans blocked legislation on Thursday that would have expanded federal healthcare and education programs for veterans, saying the $24 billion bill would bust the budget.
Even though the legislation cleared a procedural vote on Tuesday by a 99-0 vote, the measure quickly got bogged down in partisan fighting.
Supporters said the measure would have brought the most significant changes in decades to U.S. veterans' programs. For example, it called for 27 new medical facilities to help a healthcare system that is strained by veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
With Democrats pressing for passage this week, Senate Republicans, backed by their leader, Mitch McConnell, attempted to attach controversial legislation calling for possible new sanctions on Iran that President Barack Obama opposes.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/02/27/us-usa-veterans-congress-idUSBREA1Q26O20140227

So basically, because the childish brat brigades in the GOP couldn't get their way muscling Obama into poking a stick in to the Iran hornet's nest, they stomped their little ratfucking feet, took their veterans benefiting legislative ball and went home to cry to mommy (Fox "News").  The conservatives talk a good game when it comes to seeing to the best interests of our veterans - but that is all it is - meaningless, shallow talking and games.  The only true interest the conservatives have in veterans is using them as stage and propaganda props during election season.

And their excuse for blocking that legislation, which btw, they themselves approved of in the 99-0 procedural vote, being too costly to the budget, is a load of fresh, steaming hot elephant shit.  These fuckers never seem to have any objections or issues when it comes to finding pallet loads of taxpayer money to give to their corporate cronies in subsides and to the wealthiest Americans in tax cuts, or even worse, to the defense industry -- the very same cocksuckers who are getting wealthy off of creating all of these veterans in the first place.  And that is because, to the modern day GOP, those handful of wealthy, industrialist Americans are their one true constituency.

Having said all of that,

Here is how The Gadfly sees the GOP's differing standards when it comes to attending to their constituency's needs:

Joe and Jane American -- got no job?, got no health care?, got no access to education and training?, can't afford to feed your kids?, got no American dream?, got no hope??  Go fuck yourselves you lazy moochers.

Charles and David Koch -- need more corporate subsidies?, need more tax breaks on your personal income?, need us to look the other way as you stash ill-gotten gains in illegal off-shore tax havens?, need less regulation of your own industry and the banking and financial industries that launder your blood money?, need more loyalty oaths from us to do your bidding of keeping the common man's aspirations perpetually crushed??  Well here we are, on our knees, mouths wide open - shove that big oil-slicked dick and those gilded balls right in there man.

Ultimately, The Gadfly has a simple, uni-dimensional, long-term solution to this VA mess:

Stop fucking getting this country involved in wars of choice and wars that are nothing more than international natural resource grabs by the military industrial complex (Gadfly is looking at you oil, gas & mining industry fuckers).  The fewer wars we have, the fewer veterans we will have, and therefore be free from having to provide lifetime care for.  Fewer wars also translate to less taxpayer money being funneled in to the offshore bank accounts for the multi-national bomb makers, the missile makers, the gun makers, the tank and battleship makers, the chemical arms makers, etc, etc ...... and which can, and by all that is decent and moral, should be diverted to shoring up the VA system and providing the level of care that our veterans have earned, deserve and rightfully expect.

Gee - what a novel fucking concept huh?

Oh my . . . .

MAY 22, 2014, 11:22 AM EDT
Fox News distanced itself from anchor Gregg Jarrett, who was briefly jailed Wednesday after an incident at a Minneapolis airport bar.
“We were made aware late last night that Gregg Jarrett was arrested in Minneapolis yesterday and charged with a misdemeanor,” a Fox News spokesperson told TVNewser. “He is dealing with serious personal issues at this time. A date at which Gregg might return to air has yet to be determined."
Police said Jarrett seemed intoxicated and was acting belligerent Wednesday afternoon at a bar in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. He was booked at Hennepin County Jail for allegedly obstructing the legal process and released on bond early Thursday morning.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/fox-news-gregg-jarrett-arrest-statement

The Gadfly, believe it or not, feels some measure of sympathy for Gregg Jarrett.  For if The Gadfly had to show up at a job day in and day out with the self realization of knowing that he was nothing more than a paid liar and shill for a political propaganda outfit masquerading as a "news" organization, The Gadfly would be compelled to assuage his feelings of low self worth and guilt with mass quantities of off-air intoxicants as well.

Maybe it's the wake-up call Jarrett needs to cleanse himself of the flesh-eating bacteria which comprises the sum total of Fox "News" and the disease that they are on the American body politic.

Maybe . . . . . [ and if by some miracle Jarrett does come clean on his Fox experience, watch how quickly Roger Ailes and the gang on Fox & Friends turn on him like an agitated rattlesnake ].

Btw -- just curious -- the police report states that the Fox "News" host was acting "intoxicated and belligerent" - which has The Gadfly wondering - how could they tell?  Just watch a few hours in the morning of any given day of Fox "News" and tell The Gadfly that that is not typical behavior for their on-air "talent"?

"Speaker Gadfly" ---- That Has a Charmingly Eminent Ring to It . . . . . .

This anomaly doesn't occur too frequently, but here's evidence that indeed it does -- The Gadfly disagreeing with something Esquire's Charlie Pierce posted on his site.

Observe the root of the discord:

Nancy Pelosi did a smart thing and appointed her full allotment of Democrats to the upcoming Fox News special and general kangaroo festivities regarding Benghazi,Benghazi, BENGHAZI! I am sorry that all the Alan Grayson fans out there may be disappointed, but it's not like Elijah Cummings hasn't been fighting the good fight on this issue for a while now. The idea of a Democratic boycott of the committee was politically maladroit and pragmatically stupid. It is going to be of paramount importance to have someone in there, the way Barney Frank and Robert Wexler were there on the Judiciary Committee when it was considering the impeachment of Bill Clinton, and the way Richard Ben-Veniste was there to demolish the entire premise of the phony Whitewater scandal a few years earlier. Without participating, the Democrats would have been conceding the development of the narrative to the Kangaroo Kaucus not only among the Beltway opinion elite, but out in the country as well. As it happens, that's where the case for impeaching Bill Clinton truly fell apart. The Democrats who participated in that particular series of charades from 1992-1998 did a lot to hijack the issue in the dim frontierland beyond Washington. In a situation like this, the Democrats have one advantage -- they can illustrate the essential absurdity of the exercise until the country gets heartily sick of it.
My one quibble is that the Democratic lineup is a little heavy on members drawn from the various military and intelligence oversight committees, and that all of them except Cummings, who has to be fed up with this whole thing by now, are judicious in their legislative temperaments. I expect a little mockery here for my money. Maybe Adam Schiff is a laff riot. We'll see.
http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/democrats-benghazi-appointments-052114

The Gadfly watched Speaker Pelosi's announcement of the Dem Benghazi!Benghazi!!Benghazi!!! committee assignments on the live news feed today.  The Gadfly was duly unimpressed, and as a result of once again watching the Democrats capitulate to the bullying and thuggishness of the right-wing, flying monkey brigade, The Gadfly truly is on the cusp of hoping to see Pelosi either unilaterally retire or be primaried into retirement soon.

This Benghazi bullshit has been litigated to the point of absurdity over the past 3 years, mostly in part to GOP rep. Darrell Issa's arrogant grandstanding.  Investigation, upon investigation upon investigation has shown that yes, while there were perhaps some things that might possibly have been done ahead of time to mitigate the prevailing circumstances which created the atmosphere for the attack on the U.S. embassy building in Libya, not a shred of evidence has been presented to suggest that there was any overt malfeasance on behalf of the administration committed during the attacks, or in the immediate aftermath -- and no wingnuts -- an administration going on television and spinning a shitty event does not amount to "high crimes and misdemeanors" -- for if that is your standard for prosecutorial action, then we ought to be considering turning over the entire Bush regime to The Hague for investigation of war crimes and criminal negligence for their behavior before, during and after 9/11.

Nonethless, if it were up to The Gadfly -- in other words, if The Gadfly just so happened to be the Dem minority leader -- the appropriate response to the GOP's Benghazi!Benghazi!!Benghazi!!! ratfucking charade should have been to stroll out in to that  press conference today and stated the sum total of the situation thusly:

Dear fellow Americans - we, the minority party refuse to formally participate in this ratfucking charade of a show "trial" that the conservative loons are putting forth for the sole reason that they have nothing better to do with their time, and the American taxpayer's time and money.  They quite obviously have no vision on how to effectively govern the country, so they prefer to scandal monger in order to whip up their Fox News misinformed, brain-dead zombie base just in time for this November's mid-term elections, for quite frankly, energizing their base, which is the equivalent of tossing freshly plucked chicken carcasses in to a pond of hungry crocodiles, is the only thing that they have shown any measure of competence at doing.
However -- just to demonstrate to the American people that we Democrats do feel some level of responsibility toward monitoring the activities of these juvenile ratfucking frauds, we will assign Florida Representative Alan Grayson to attend to the committee meetings - for after all - there really should be some level of experienced adult supervision in the room when the conservative toddlers began playing with their shiny new subpoena power toy, a toy by the way, which they have reserved solely for themselves.
Therefore, Rep. Grayson has been granted full leeway from his party leadership to deal with these bamboozling conservative hypocrites in any way he sees fit, within the bounds of fairness and decency naturally, and which are befitting of such sniveling, ratfucking little shitheels such as they are.
Oh - you in the mainstream media who want to continue coddling these ratfucking clowns by regurgitating every single one of their easily disprovable talking points without fact-based analysis - you can all go pound sand in your collective sphincters.  Your continued enabling of these assholes provides no detectable benefit to the American public, and therefore a good, solid pounding of coarse sand in the sphincter is the least punitive form of penance due for your gross incompetence, dereliction of duty, and moral breach of public trust.

Yup -- that is precisely how "Speaker Gadfly" would have dealt with this shit dear readers, and The Gadfly hopes that some day the Democrats might grow half of a fucking spine and take a page from The Gadfly's playbook on how to deal with cowards, bullies and charlatans --- but The Gadfly is not holding his breath that that day will come any time soon . . . . no - not any time soon.

Oh - and it should be duly noted that Darrel Issa's monkey-poo flinging sideshow will still going on in the House, simply because that smug little ratfucking prick is gloriously intent on keeping the flaps to his own Benghazi!Benghazi!!Benghazi!!! circus tent wide open - new committee be damned.  The whole thing is just a big fucking joke to these jagoffs, and sadly, the joke is on the American people, only most are either too oblivious or to apathetic to give a shit.

A Hungry Child Doesn't Ponder His Address or His Demographic Status -- All He Thinks of is When His Next Meal Might Be . . .

Charles Pierce over at Esquire believes that he detects the faint din of right-wing doggy whistles:

Josh Marshall goes deep into the hole and makes great backhand stab from a piece in Tiger Beat On The Potomac. It seems that the GOP monkeyhouse that makes up half of our national legislature has decided that it's not even going to try and hide it any more.
And in a surprising twist, the bill language specifies that only rural areas are to benefit in the future from funding requested by the administration this year to continue a modest summer demonstration program to help children from low-income households - both urban and rural - during those months when school meals are not available. Since 2010, the program has operated from an initial appropriation of $85 million, and the goal has been to test alternative approaches to distribute aid when schools are not in session. The White House asked for an additional $30 million to continue the effort, but the House bill provides $27 million for what's described as an entirely new pilot program focused on rural areas only. Democrats were surprised to see urban children were excluded. And the GOP had some trouble explaining the history itself. But a spokeswoman confirmed that the intent of the bill is a pilot project in "rural areas" only.
(And before anyone starts howling, this isn't in any way "surprising" to me, either, and any Democrat who honestly is surprised by this development really needs to get out more.)
"Rural areas only" is a phrase that you do not need the Enigma machine to decode. So, your meth-cooking cousin in the Ozarks gets her kid a free lunch, but an honors student in west Philadelphia is out of luck. Is it even necessary to point out at this point how much I despair of the rebranding?

Dog whistle The Gadfly's leathery old ass.  That dear readers is a behemoth cargo ship sized, mega air-horn.

The Gadfly is pretty certain that the Republicans who crafted this dehumanizing bill know quite well that 80% of the nation's populace lives in or near urban areas.  And of the country's minority population, the percentage of them living in urban areas is also significantly higher - with nearly half of the nation's most populous cities now having minorities outnumbering whites.  And vice versa - it stands to reason that of the 20% of Americans who are classified as rural inhabitants, a clear majority of them are non-minority - the conservatives are very cognizant of those basic facts - no doubt about it.

Now - before The Gadfly gets in to the meat of his tirade here, let us establish one crystal clear notion - The Gadfly is not outraged that poor families in rural areas are getting additional taxpayer funding to help their kids stave off starvation during the non-school year months.  Not at all.

The Gadfly is adamant, and always has been, in stating that not one single child in the wealthiest nation on the entire fucking planet should have to go to bed hungry night after night - and the fact that there are 16.5 million (22% of the child population) children in this country classified as living in poverty (with hunger being a defining characteristic) is a national shame which the leaders (regardless of politics) of our "exceptional" country should be downright fucking ashamed of.  A UNICEF study released in 2013 examined child poverty rates in 35 of the world's most modernized countries.  America landed in 34th place on that study behind countries like Latvia, Slovakia and Hungary (pun intended).  Can anyone in their right mind explain to The Gadfly what it is about that fact that makes America so goddamn exceptional?

Now - having laid the ground work for what has really gotten The Gadfly to grinding his teeth and clenching his fists, let us now discuss this insidious bill and how the Republicans are of the belief that kids in rural America are more deserving of extraneous nutritional assistance than kids in urban areas -- shall we?

The Gadfly would like to see the formula that the GOP used to arrive at the conclusion that a rural child's quality of life is much more worthy of investing in than an urban child's quality of life.  The Gadfly would like to see the scientific data which shows that a dirt poor rural white kid is likelier to aspire to greatness and become a productive member of society than an an urban hispanic or black kid is, and which therefore justifies more government assistance being showered on the poor white kid.  Waiting . . . . . . . . .

Time's up sports fans.

A study by the Carsey Institute a few years ago found that "although the number of low-income children is higher in urban America, as a share of the population, their rate of low income is similar in both rural areas and central cities."  Translation:  poor white kids in rural areas share a single, unifying commonality with poor minority kids in inner cities -- they're both living in life affecting poverty and they're both suffering from the soul crushing affliction of hunger.

So - The Gadfly will ask the GOP conservative pieces of squalid monkey shit who crafted this bill one more time -- where do you fucking monsters get off in arbitrarily deciding that the poor kids in your rural districts are more deserving of extra nutritional assistance than the poor children in urban areas?

The Gadfly knows that they cannot answer that question -- not truthfully anyways -- for it would simply validate that which The Gadfly and many others already know about who these modern-day conservatives are and which Americans they truly give a shit about.  And it really does go right to the heart of why The Gadfly is of the unwavering view that this disease of modern day conservatism truly needs to be destroyed and relegated back to the dank, musty, bacteria-infested fever swamp of hate-filled tribalism that it was puked forth from once and for all.

The Gadfly is wholly convinced that the eternal marginalization of these awful human beings and their lifeless, malevolent movement is the first step towards the salvation of this country's soul and it's future.

History - 101 . . . . .

This man and his writings ensured victory over the British and Independence ....

He was also a non-believer ...

Age of Reason, Part First, Section 1

IT has been my intention, for several years past, to publish my thoughts upon religion. I am well aware of the difficulties that attend the subject, and from that consideration, had reserved it to a more advanced period of life. I intended it to be the last offering I should make to my fellow-citizens of all nations, and that at a time when the purity of the motive that induced me to it, could not admit of a question, even by those who might disapprove the work.

The circumstance that has now taken place in France of the total abolition of the whole national order of priesthood, and of everything appertaining to compulsive systems of religion, and compulsive articles of faith, has not only precipitated my intention, but rendered a work of this kind exceedingly necessary, lest in the general wreck of superstition, of false systems of government, and false theology, we lose sight of morality, of humanity, and of the theology that is true.

As several of my colleagues and others of my fellow-citizens of France have given me the example of making their voluntary and individual profession of faith, I also will make mine; and I do this with all that sincerity and frankness with which the mind of man communicates with itself.

I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life.
I believe in the equality of man; and I believe that religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavoring to make our fellow-creatures happy.

But, lest it should be supposed that I believe in many other things in addition to these, I shall, in the progress of this work, declare the things I do not believe, and my reasons for not believing them.

I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.
All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.

I do not mean by this declaration to condemn those who believe otherwise; they have the same right to their belief as I have to mine. But it is necessary to the happiness of man, that he be mentally faithful to himself. Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.

It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind, as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe, he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime. He takes up the trade of a priest for the sake of gain, and in order to qualify himself for that trade, he begins with a perjury. Can we conceive any thing more destructive to morality than this?

Soon after I had published the pamphlet Common Sense, in America, I saw the exceeding probability that a revolution in the system of government would be followed by a revolution in the system of religion. The adulterous connection of church and state, wherever it had taken place, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, had so effectually prohibited by pains and penalties, every discussion upon established creeds, and upon first principles of religion, that until the system of government should be changed, those subjects could not be brought fairly and openly before the world; but that whenever this should be done, a revolution in the system of religion would follow. Human inventions and priestcraft would be detected; and man would return to the pure, unmixed and unadulterated belief of one God, and no more.

Every national church or religion has established itself by pretending some special mission from God, communicated to certain individuals. The Jews have their Moses; the Christians their Jesus Christ, their apostles and saints; and the Turks their Mahomet, as if the way to God was not open to every man alike.

Each of those churches show certain books, which they call revelation, or the word of God. The Jews say, that their word of God was given by God to Moses, face to face; the Christians say, that their word of God came by divine inspiration: and the Turks say, that their word of God (the Koran) was brought by an angel from Heaven. Each of those churches accuse the other of unbelief; and for my own part, I disbelieve them all.

As it is necessary to affix right ideas to words, I will, before I proceed further into the subject, offer some other observations on the word revelation. Revelation, when applied to religion, means something communicated immediately from God to man.

No one will deny or dispute the power of the Almighty to make such a communication, if he pleases. But admitting, for the sake of a case, that something has been revealed to a certain person, and not revealed to any other person, it is revelation to that person only. When he tells it to a second person, a second to a third, a third to a fourth, and so on, it ceases to be a revelation to all those persons. It is revelation to the first person only, and hearsay to every other, and consequently they are not obliged to believe it.

It is a contradiction in terms and ideas, to call anything a revelation that comes to us at second-hand, either verbally or in writing. Revelation is necessarily limited to the first communication — after this, it is only an account of something which that person says was a revelation made to him; and though he may find himself obliged to believe it, it cannot be incumbent on me to believe it in the same manner; for it was not a revelation made to me, and I have only his word for it that it was made to him.

When Moses told the children of Israel that he received the two tables of the commandments from the hands of God, they were not obliged to believe him, because they had no other authority for it than his telling them so; and I have no other authority for it than some historian telling me so. The commandments carry no internal evidence of divinity with them; they contain some good moral precepts, such as any man qualified to be a lawgiver, or a legislator, could produce himself, without having recourse to supernatural intervention.

Wow - the Teabaggers would have hanged him.
