The Gadfly cannot fathom how anyone can go to their grave with so much hate in their heart. It just does not register on his humanity and love scale.
Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, known for protesting the funerals of members of the military, is "on the edge of death," according to his estranged son.
Nate Phelps wrote on Facebook Saturday night that his father was not doing well.
"I've learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the 'God Hates Fags' Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the 'church' back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas," he wrote. "I'm not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made."
Nate Phelps then confirmed to Patheos that he had learned from multiple ex-communicated members of the church that his father was not doing well.
What always intrigued The Gadfly about the
Westboro Baptist group was how it was that they were able to reconcile their hatred for selected humans with Christ's teachings to love all, lepers even. Them's some mighty big fucking hoops to jump through to get to that nirvana.
They are the classic example of insane religious extremism -- only in this case -- they're right here in the good Ol' US of A.
God bless us. Every one. [ h/t Tiny Tim ]
