The Gadfly is not an accomplished prognosticator by any stretch of the imagination, but when your piddly little traffic blocking scandal suddenly morphs in to charges that you have acted like a Mafia Don in deliberately withholding disaster relief funds because an opposing party mayor wasn't toeing the line on a major business deal that benefited your cronies --- well --- that is the sound of air escaping from a balloon, and very possibly followed by the clinking of iron jail cell doors behind you as you "go away" for awhile.
An investigation into the office of New Jersey governor Chris Christie has been broadened to include allegations his deputy held Hurricane Sandy relief funds “hostage”, for approval on a redevelopment plan favoured by the governor.
Christie, who is seen as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2016, is already subject to an investigation and lawsuits concerning the allegedly politically motivated closure of one of the world’s busiest bridges, the George Washington bridge between New Jersey and New York.
On Saturday, the Hoboken mayor, Dawn Zimmer, added further fuel to the political fire by alleging that in May 2013 the lieutenant governor, Kim Guadagno, threatened to hold back aid related to damage caused by Sandy, unless Zimmer supported a proposed development by the Rockefeller Group.http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/19/christie-investigation-broadens-over-claims-of-holding-sandy-aid-hostage
But what really has to have Governor Pillsbury Doughboy sweating globules of vegetable oil is the fact that the lady Mayor making these explosive allegations is practically begging investigators to put her under oath and give her a lie detector test. Yikes! Which explains the Christie camp's loud and defiant denials of any impropriety.
Mitt Romney and his advisers rejected Chris Christie as a running mate in 2012 for various publicly stated reasons. Perhaps their in depth background investigation of the guy uncovered some unsavory things about him and his lackeys that appears only now to be coming to light. If that is the case, The Gadfly gives Romney more credit than he was given in the integrity department as it relates to the 2012 election (but nothing more).
Only wish that the Romney operatives would have shared that intelligence with the good people of New Jersey prior to Christie's re-election this past November. Might well have spared that state all of the expensive drama to come.
Either way, the media sharks, as is their wont, are beginning to smell blood in the water, and Christie is quite the blubber-laden walrus. And frankly dear readers, that does not bode well for the future presidential aspirations of the big man from New Jersey.
Pass the popcorn kids -- this show is just beginning.
