The Gadfly's taste for Bill Maher's rants ebbs and flows. There are times when the stench of Maher's Libertardian views just simply overpowers whatever well intended message lies within the core of whatever point he is attempting to convey.
On the other hand - there are times when Maher just simply knocks the proverbial ball not only out of the park, but right through the living room window of some greasy palmed hedge fund manager's condo across the street from the ballpark.
Observe:
The Gadfly just recently viewed a 2 hour documentary on The History Channel called "Crime Wave: 18 Months of Mayhem."
This intriguing film recounts the true story of the rise to national fame of some of the most infamous bank robbers, gangsters and killers in America's history during the Great Depression era.
The one message that The Gadfly clearly took from this film was the extent to which the oppressed American poor and decimated lower and middle class folk actually openly sympathized with the Dillingers and the Bonnie & Clydes and the Machine Gun Kellys of the time because the people clearly held the banks, Wall Street and the wealthy elites directly responsible for their own misery. And while most Americans of those times knew very well the difference between right and wrong, they viewed the wrongs that were being perpetrated by the ruling class as much more egregious and evil than the robbing and killing being done by the gangsters, principally because the gangster's crimes in most cases were being committed against those very same ruling elites.
Now -- and lest it need to even be stated -- The Gadfly is in no way advocating for aggrieved Americans to start robbing banks and kidnapping rich folk. However, The Gadfly most certainly holds no compunction to counseling the wealthy elites that you fuckers truly ought to consider lessening the pressure of your boot heels on the necks of the less fortunate in our society. For, it is not by any means, an exaggeration to proffer the observation that history has been none too kind to those who have failed to heed the lessons of the outcomes of prior unbridled Aristocracies in the annals of human forms of governing.
