And there it is:
NEW YORK -- CBS' "60 Minutes" announced Thursday night that it's reviewing acontroversial Oct. 27 report on the attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, to determine if its eyewitness, security officer Dylan Davies, "misled" the network. "60 Minutes" said it had "learned of new information that undercuts" the harrowing account given on air.
The New York Times reported Thursday that Davies previously told the FBI that he was not at the U.S. compound on the night of Sept. 11, 2012 -- an account that directly contradicts his "eyewitness" statements on air.
The Huffington Post confirmed through a U.S. official that Davies told the FBI he didn't witness events on the ground the night four Americans were killed in a terrorist attack. This marks the second time that Davies' televised account has conflicted with his previous statements.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/08/60-minutes-benghazi-review-_n_4237132.html
So in a nutshell -- the right wingers and the Republicans have been throwing breathless kiniption fits over a claimed "cover-up" of the now two-year old Benghazi incident since this CBS 60 Minutes report aired last week, and now, as it is slowly coming to light, it appears that the CBS report was fatally flawed because it relied heavily on a known liar and huckster's statements.
The Gadfly has followed this story carefully since it's ugly inception. The Benghazi incident has been nothing more than a creepy attempt by right wing politicians to manufacture Presidential scandal out of a tragedy -- the same type of tragedy that occurred many times under the George W. Bush regime and which was never put through the same investigative fervor as has been under Obama.
The situation in Libya after Ghadaffi's fall was constantly fluid and violently unpredictable. It was known that the region where the Benghazi CIA outpost was at (yes - that's right - CIA) was still a hotbed of fundamentalist Muslim activity and then Ambassador Christopher Stevens had been given the opportunity to leave the area, but chose to stay and try to make a difference. The man is no doubt a hero. That is not the issue here.
But for the right wing to try and use his death as a political football aimed at damaging President Obama is nothing short of loathsome. It brings The Gadfly's memories back to 1998 and the sexual witch hunt and impeachment of Bill Clinton. It is political opportunism at it's most slimy. And if The Gadfly's Republican friends disagree with that statement, I have a simple question -- show me the Democratic zealousness in prosecuting the myriad of similar attacks which occurred under Bush. Guess what -- they don't fucking exist.
If CBS doesn't 'fess up and admit that it's reporting on this story was not only shoddy, but grossly sub-standard for a major "news" organization, The Gadfly will never, ever put one stock of faith in any goddamn thing they report ever again. Nor should anyone else.
